William Hung’s doctrine to Du Fu’s poetry doctrine is a critical process that cannot be ignored when we try to understand the Chinese classical poetic with reaching out to the global . Image is highly valued in Chinese classical poetry. In the early twentieth century, American Imagists began to develop an understanding of this concept. William Hung (1893-1980), a modern historian of the mid twentieth century, translated Du Fu’s poetry to re-introduce Western readers to the true connotations of Chinese poetry. Hong’s contribution has four aspects: 1. Modernization and indexing of Du Fu’s poetry. 2. Dialectics and connotations of Du Fu’s poetry. 3. Writing a biography of Du Fu. 4. Translating three hundred and seventy-four poems of Du Fu. William Hung’s scholarly works have introduced Du Fu to the world. Although his description of Du Fu’s life cannot avoid certain controversies, he has eliminated many Western poets misreading of Du Fu’s poetry. Hong has been able to present a full version of Du Fu’s poetic spirit and artistic creation to English readers. At the same time, he has highlighted the important position of Du Fu in the history of Chinese poetry. In the past, William Hung’s academic achievement has been ignored by Western academic circles. As a result, there is little evidence of his communication with Western academic circles. This study not only aims to show William Hung’s academic achievements and investigate unresolved problems thereof, but also to display his impact on Western Sinology circles. |
