Title On Pi Ya and its Use in Song Exegesis of the Book of Songs

Abstract This essay proposes to discuss two questions: 1) the relation between Pi Ya by Lu Dian (1042-1102) and the Book of Songs, 2) the scholarly application of Pi Ya’s interpretations in the exegetical works on the Book of Songs during Song Dynasty. Following an inductive analysis of the content of Pi Ya and references to this book in the Song exegesis of the Book of Songs, the essay will identify the possible reason or reasons for Pi Ya’s appearance in the studies of the Book of Songs. The essay will also investigate some examples as well as the significance of these studies’ using of Pi Ya. The discussion will take turns to examine the content of Pi Ya, clarify the book’s relation with the Book of Songs, offer a statistical analysis of the references to Pi Ya in the Book of Songs exegesis, and interpret the significance of such application. The essay hopes that its discussion will advance the understanding of Pi Ya, outline the overall situation and development of the exegesis of the Book of Songs in Song and, at the same time, provide some research materials to be of assistance to today’s scholarship of the Book of Songs.
