Title	The Interpretation of “What is above form is called Tao; what is within form is called material”

Abstract	This essay indicates that the word “ form” in “What is above form is called Tao; what is within form is called material” is a simple name of the whole images of heaven and forms of earth. The “above form” (in philosophy, it is translated into metaphysics ) means the abstract principles of the images of heaven and forms of earth, that is called Tao. The “within form” means the concrete things that are produced by the change of heaven and earth, and the interaction of Yin and Yang, that is called material. In this essay, the author analyze and discuss the different theories on “Tao comes before and material after”,“Tao has no separation from material” and “material comes before and Tao after”, and give his comments on them. He regards that Tao-material (The principle of material in Tao) takes the form-material (the concrete material of form) as the center. The form means the image and form of heaven and earth. Tao completes forms, and Tao is in forms. Form produces materials, and Tao is also in materials. That (Tao’s) transforming things in completing, stimulating things in motion, and raising things up in action are the events and affairs of change and penetration, but each of Tao and material comes either before or after. In the conclusion, the author makes a comparison on the “above form” in the I-Ching and the metaphysics in the western philosophy.
