| Abstract |
The research of Taiwan’s classical literature encompasses predominantly poems as opposed to prose which expounds historical events, socio-political policies and customs. Zheng Yong-xi and Zheng Yong-jan are writers who represented in Zhu-Qian during the late-Quin Taiwan. These two writers reflect the relevance between the local literati and social fluctuations. This article will analyze Yong-xi and Yong-jan’s experiences, and expound on the cultural connotation of prose from four aspects. These aspects are the relationship between the family economy, education, the effects of the imperial exams in North Taiwan at the Academy of Classical Learning, and citizen participation in public affairs. A contrast of the similarities and differences in writing styles will be discussed. In studying these two writers much information is gleaned about the culture of the late-Quin Taiwan, thereby showing the relevance and importance of prose.
