Abstract The article explores the development of urban poetry in Taiwan across fifty years since 1950s. The development is divided into four distinct periods according to compositional strategies or stylistic features in the works of important poets. The periods are as followed: [1] The urban landscape as illusionary manifestation and a source of poetic originality, as represented by Wu Wang-yao. [2] Urbanization as the subject of criticism and negative reflection, as represented by Luo Men and Lee Kui-xian [3] The apocalyptic imagery of the urban landscape from the perspective of science fiction, as represented by Cheng Ke-hua, Lin Yao-de and Lin Qun-sheng. [4] The poetic of the new generation in which urban phenomenon is integrated in the description of everyday life, and the mutual dependence and independence between city dwellers and their environment are recognized. Through analysis and comparison among the four periods, the article charts the journey from conflict to integration between the poets and their urban environment in Taiwan.
