Abstract It is often to confuse the Chinese characters Ci(朿), Lai(來)in ancient documents from the Western Zhou Period. People of later generations misread these two characters since they look quite similar. We commonly thought Zao(棗), Ji(棘)be made by Ci(朿), but according to bronze inscriptions and texts on the Chu Bamboo Manuscripts of Goudian(郭店), Shangbo(上博), and the silk Manuscript texts of Mawangdui (馬王堆),traditional wordbooks like the Hanjian(汗簡), the Guwensishengyun (古文四聲韻), the Dianzhengliushutong (訂正六書通)in addition, they should be made by Lai(來).An effective way to identify ancient Chinese characters is according to their radicals. Lai’s original meaning is barley. It has pins just like Zao and Ji. Besides writing styles, they also have phonetic relationship.
