| Abstract |
The content of Chuang-tzu’s though of health-preservation is extremely rich and insightful. For example, Chuang-tzu does not deny the currently popular message method; however, in his opinion, such method is too technical. The greatest contribution of Chuang-tzu’s thought of keeping one’s health lies in the sensibility of its origin, and that’s why its theory stresses more on spiritual cultivation. In fact, among the various ways of keeping one’s health, the spiritual aspect cannot be overlooked. If a person violates the laws and commits the crimes, thereby disabling one’s body, how could such a person discuss the issue of preserving his/her health? Chuang-tzu does not deliberately keep himself in good health, yet he lives until the age of eighty-four. This proves the correctness and feasibility of his theory. The major goal of this paper is to present the facts, and it is called object-language; if the original text is obscure, then theoretical explanations will be provided to clarify it, thus called meta-language. It is hoped that through the concerted use of these two methods, an outline of Chuang-tzu’s conception of one’s health-preservation could thus be drawn. Chuang-tzu, the philosophy, the discourse on his thought of health- preservation might enable people’s understanding of him, and open up a new vision.
