| Abstract |
The purpose of this paper is to address the thoughts on musical cultivation and musical universe in Yue Wei. This discussion is expected to enable us to recognize the roles and functions of music in Ch’en Wei of the Han Dynasty. The discussion also helps us sense and realize the means and meaning of the philosophy on heaven-man reaction. The highlights of this paper accordingly include: 1. Principles and practice of musical cultivation. 2. Thoughts on musical universe as embodied in musical instruments and musical tunes. 3. The mutual influences of the heaven-man philosophy and musical theories in Yue Wei. Through the discussion, we are able to see a more complete picture of the complex and diverse literary texts presented in Yue Wei. Additionally, we are able to obtain a concrete interpretation or explanation for the mutual impacts between musical thoughts in Ch’en Wei and the philosophy on heaven-man reaction.
