Abstract Zhu Shan, active in the late Yuan and early Ming periods, was summoned to the capital at the beginning of the Hongwu era, where he ranked first in the court examination. He eventually rose to the position of Grand Academician of the Wen Yuan Pavilion. The work “Farewell Preface for Mr. Yan Hui on His Return to the South from Jinling” indicates, through its title, that it was written by Zhu Shan when Li Zhen was returning south from Jinling to Xinhui in Guangdong Province. This piece is only found in the appendix of Li Zhen’s collected works. There are doubts regarding the transmission, content of this preface, and the identity of Zhu Shan as indicated at the end of the text. This paper focuses on this farewell preface, examining and discussing it through a review of the lives and friendships of Zhu Shan and Li Zhen individuals involved.
