Abstract Mr. Chun-Sheng Chu (朱駿聲) was one of the four authorities of Ching Dynasty in researching “Shuo Wen” (說文). This article is focused on his masterpiece “Shuo Wen Tung Hsun Ting Hseng” (說文通訓定聲): the scholium and Phoneticism of “Shuo Wen,” where I will discuss Mr. Chu′s creative concept, its value and influences. This article is composed of five chapters: Chapter I: Preface Chapter II: The Creative Concept of “Tung Hsun Ting Hseng” (通訓定聲). In this chapter, I will discuss the author′s creative concept about “Shuo Wen,” the scholium and phoneticism. Chapter III: The Value of “Tung Hsun Ting Hseng,” in which I will comment on the academic value of this book from the aspects of written langage, rhymes and tones, as well as scholium. Chapter IV: The Influence of “Tung Hsun Ting Hseng,” where I will discuss the influence of this book on semantics, etymology and the science of Dictionary. Chapter V: Conclusion, where I will discuss the contribution and defect of this book.
