Abstract |
Synopsis: There are two significant points I would state in this thesis. First, I would clarify the concept of viewing things in Chuang Tze′s philosophy. Second, I would review the application of such concept to the appreciation theory of Chinese paintings. And I would discuss them in 3 sections. Section I – To clarify the concept of viewing things in Chuang Tze′s philosophy based in three aspects: 1. The thought of physical phenomenon from “transformation of things” to “the equity of all nature”; 2. The way of viewing things from “the purity of mind” and by “sitting back and forgetting all”; 3. The infinitive concept of space and time. Section II – To review Chuang Tze′s fables of “Dialogue at Hao-Liang” and “Transformation of Things” where he impliedly expressed the supreme state of surpassing worldliness and mystery; and based on such idea to perceive the artistic visions in Chuang Tze′s concept of viewing things Section III – To study the application of Chuang Tze′s concept of viewing things to the appreciation theory of Chinese paintings, which includes: 1. The idea of “emphasizing in impression but ignoring form” and “emphasizing on mood but ignoring form” in the literati painting style in the Six Dynasties; 2. The vision effect by painters to “viewing things without noticing their existence,” “to associate individual nature with the great nature (Yi Tien Ho Tien),”: and “to improve skills by Dao (way of truth)”; 3. The universal meaning contained in the rools of Chinese paintings: 4. The elegant style of paintings and its development to the spirit of surpassing worldliness; 5. By means of leaving space, wrinkling brush, ink spectrum and the imposing mood to present the idea of Dao united with skills in Chuang Tze′s theory.
