Abstract Chen Yan’s Shiyishi lunwen is a practical literary criticism on ancient prose, which is thought of considerably by academic circles, but absent in Taiwan region for a long time. As the latest edition by Chen Bu, his Chenshiyiji and Wang shui-zhao, his Lidaiwenxuan. This article, relying on Chen Bu’s book of Tang Dynasty ancient prose, summarized the critical views presented by Chen Yan from his primary theory, creation theory to practical criticism. The research finds that Chen Yan affirms ancient prose which initially derives from Confucius classics, weighs upon the arrangement of structure, and proposes the authenticity and naturalness in portrayal; however, opposes excessive vulgarity and distich. Chen Yan fundamentally critiques ancient prose from its origin of the concept and literary genre perspective, and preferably asserts Liu Zongyuan and Li Ao, and for the Tong City with its method of Jack up Han Yu and Belittle Liu Zongyuan, expresses a disaffection. This kind of practical and realistic attitudes can be justified by means of close-textual reading from chapter to chapter, and renders the substantial and impartial characteristics for the book.
