Title An Inquiry into the Implication if “Affection” in Tao Yuan-Ming’s Hsien Ching Fu
Author Wang Liang-yu
Page 121-142
Abstract The compilation of Tao Yuan-Ming’s “Fu” follows a fixed set of models. Judging from its preface, one can safely tell that “Hsien Ching Fu” composed by Mr. Tao basically aims to constrain improper affection, making the author introspect himself as well. The motivation for Mr. Tao to compose this “Fu” arises from those masterpieces created by other writers. In this masterpiece, however, the Chinese character, “Hsien”, in “Hsien Ching Fu” cannot be deciphered and explained literally. There exists a discrepancy among the four ways of periods of writing which, in turn, express diverse affection. Of them, the most stark and unmistakable one which carries the strongest affection would be “Ten Wishes & Ten Disappointments”. The fluctuation of poets’ frame of mind reaches its peak, finally realizing that someday he would fail irrespective of multifarious efforts he puts into it. Owing to this, the poet’s mood turns into calm once more. Besides, from the occurrence of affection at the beginning of this work, it is fathomed that the poet fell in love with a sacred woman. The poet was trapped in the quagmire of strong affection. He is reluctant to call it quits as well as to relinquish any possible chance to see her albeit the poet’s efforts eventually turn into a fiasco. Nevertheless, suffering from a long time of torturing, he is still unable to make his dreams come true, making him behave like a man without self-assurance. Thanks to this, his relentless affection stands out from this work.
