Author Chi, Hsu-sheng

Abstract ‘Baiju’ of "Xiaoya" is a famous poem in The Book of Poetry. But since some problematic phrases like ‘jiake,’’wuqi,’and ‘Jinyu’ have never been made in the courese of history. As for the problem whether this poem was a fuor a bi was still in question, too. n thi thesis I shall illustrate a collection of rhyme, tone as well as the explanatory notes, Ishall also esplain why that ‘jiake’ is eqal to ‘jiaya’ which shares the same meaning whith ‘xiaoyao’ (wondering)ane therefore it can be interpreted as "wondering with sorrow." Morever, with the proof of the ducuments of pre-Qin Dynasty as well as the bronze script of Chou Dynasty, I shall explain that ‘wuqi’ means’ "without an end" instend of "without a chance" and that ‘jinyu’ can only imply "nobility’ intead of "reluetant to give up." From these interpretations we can see that the white colt implies the virtuous live in reclusion and is not willing to render service for the country. hence, "white colt, and high offcial who stabs King Hsuan" which appeared in the preface th Mao’s Poetry seems quite a proper usage.
