Abstract Biography of the great finance master Sang Hongyang in the Western Han dynasty (152-80 B.C.) was absent in historical records. His life story can be traced only by his contmeporaries and events that are recorded in The Book of History(Shiji). The History of the Han Dynasty (Hanshu) and Debates on the State-run Salt and Iron Businesses (Yen Tie Lun). In recent years, scholars tried to piece together the chronicle of Sang Hongyang as detailedly as possible. However there were different views regarding the determination of specific dates and events. The author tries to clarify the levels, functions and the similarities/differences of some significant official positions which Sang took, such as Zhisuduwei (agricultural officer), Sousu duwei (food provision official), and Dasinong (finance minister). The author also points out the errors made by relative records respectively found in The Social Backgrounds of the Western Han Dynasty (Xi Han Hui Yao) and General Mirror for the Aids of Government (Zi Zhi Tung Jian).
