Title Analysis of the Offering Ceremonies By The Sect of Cheng-Yi Taoist in Taiwan And its Intention

Abstract The sect of Cheng-Yi Taoism in Taiwan adheres to the traditional offering ceremonies, which puts emphasis on the “vegetarian diet and righteous practice”. In particular, the offering of “non-bloody” sacrifices represents its religious spirit of pursuing “simplicity and purity”. This article interprets the framework, lineage and connotation that are symbolized in the offering ceremonies and rituals held by the sect of Cheng-Yi Taoist. According to field survey, the offering ceremonies show a variety of forms: to light up incense, to offer flowers, to offer incense, to offer lamp, to offer wine and to libate the wine. The ritual framework not only serves the religious functions but also combines with the art of poetry, music and dance. The offering ceremonies held by the sect of Cheng-Yi Taoist connote four kinds of inherit qualities and functions. (1) Pious sacrifice refers to reciprocation and blessing. (2) Vegetarian offerings lead to virtuous practice and purity. (3) Everything has to attain perfection and relates to specific allusion. (4) Taking and wearing Taoist pills and amulets aim to enhance felicities and refine inner quality. In conclusion, the ceremonies and rituals combine the religious practices with aesthetics of arts.
