Abstract Chastity Zhang was a murder victim in Kun-Shan An-Tin in the middle period of Ming Dynasty (the middle period of the 16th century). She was murdered one year after she was married, dying in stout resistance to the humiliation by her evil mother-in-law and a villain. Gui You-Guang, in order to arrest the ringleader and to crack down on the criminals, not only collected the comments from the literate and officialdom, but also superintended the government to immediately investigate the truth. He further wrote down plenty of articles about Madame Zhang (Zhang Chastity) in honor of her chastity and fidelity. The genre of these articles ranges widely from narrative(記),essay(辨),elegy(祭文),zhao-ci(招辭Ode to recall her soul),to letters(書信). Madame Zhang is the most notable character in the anthology of Gui You-Guang. This paper aims to examine these articles and to explore the reasons why the author (i.e. Gui You-Guang) placed so much attention on Madame Zhang’s stories. This paper also attempts to investigate the intention of “Ming History – Biography of Fidelity Women(明史‧列女傳)” to later record the same story and to discuss the differences between the narration in Ming History and the original narration by Gui You-Guang. Furthermore, how do those narrations provide the support for understanding Gui You-Guang’s life? This paper involves seven sections: (1) the righteousness atmosphere in the world obviously observd among women, (2) the death of Zhang Chastity, (3) the struggling of the murderer, (4) thd discussion of Madame Zhang’s chastity and fidelity, (5) the mysterious phenomenon, (6) the solidity firmly standing for ciscipline and eternity(綱常), and (7) the conclusion.
