Abstract In the past, when scholars explained the meaning of oracle bone inscriptions, they usually focused on single character without referring to any other related patterns. Sometimes, the same element in other characters was assumed to be of different meanings. This way of interpretation of ten caused confusion. This article is based on the theory of “set-pattern of oracle bone inscriptions”. That is, ancient Chinese people created a set of similar patterns applying to related words. They created words to reflect their daily needs. I attempt to generalize the basic rules that ancient Chinese people created words according to set-pattern. This article is composed of the following five sections: I.Preface II.Textual research on “陟”(zhi, ascending) and “降”(jiang, descending) III.Textural research on”出”(chu, out) and “各”(geh, each) IV.Textual research on “去”(chiuh,go) V.Conclusion I try to research oracle bone inscriptions with a new theory. The theory of set-pattern is useful to explain ancient Chinese words and to prevent from confusion.
