Abstract |
In this article, I illustrate the syntax of the Chinese characterp-"Jiann"(見), which was used in the passive voce of ancient Chinese language. There are two kinds of usage for the passive voice by "Jiann". First, "Jiann" is followed by a verb; that is, "Jiann+V". The subject of "Jiann" is often to be the object of an action, in which the doer is omitted. It means that (somebody) has done the subject something. Second, the doer must follow to a preposition, Yu (于); that is, "Jiann" +V. + "Yu"+ the doer. "Jiann" is converted to an auxiliary verb, representing a passive voice. Ints syntax is similarly as "to be PP by somebody". Besides, there is another usage of "Jiann". Its form is the same as the passive voice of "Jiann". However, "Jiann" is converted to an adverb. Its syntax is an active voice rather that a passive one. "Jiann" refers to a pronoun-me, which is the object of the verb. In this case, the syntax of "Jiann+V" means somebody (sees me) and does something to me.
