Abstract |
Scholastic terminology is a customary term used to annotate Chinese classics. There are general usage, definition and syntax. This article compares the usage of two scholastic terms, “zhi-yen”(to imply) and “zhi-wei-yen”(to mean), giving examples from Zheng Shuan-san’s annotation on《Book of Rites》. I only intend to discuss the meaning and usage applied to scholium but not to quote the original classics. Firstly, I analyze the syntax structure of the two scholastic terms. Secondly, I explain their usage: one is to clarify the derivation of specific word, and the other is to imply the meaning of a phonetic loan character. The exploration of derivation is something related to the sound of a word, and the meaning of derivate word is quite similar to the original one. One may confuse derivation with mutually interpretation. This article defined “mutually interpretation” as a word with the same meaning and same sound as another one but in different form. Zheng’s annotation on《Book of Rites》did not contain such usage. Therefore, I exclude such category applied to the usage of zhi-yen and zhi-wei-yen.
